Shooting with Mark Mawson and Olympus

Who is your favourite photographer?
Gregory Crewdson followed closely by Erwin Olaf.

What are your photographic goals?
To be respected as a photographer & artist by my peers, to be able to continue shooting until very old age without retiring.

Describe the perfect assignment?
A high profile campaign shot in dramatic locations.

What camera systems do
you use?

The professional Olympus E-3 for shoots where I need the flexibility of a smaller camera and extremely fast lenses, without the need to worry about dust on the sensor. For my underwater work, I also use the
Olympus E-3 in a housing.

What camera equipment would you most like to ‘play’ with?
Some of the old 11x14 or bigger plate cameras & lenses from the early 1900’s and the early lights they used.

What do you dislike?
I dislike the idea of having hundreds of hard drives full of images piled up in years to come.

And like?
I love the whole process of creating a picture, from conception of the idea, to finding a location, to lighting, directing the subject and capturing the final shot.

What advice would you give to up and coming photographers?
Get out there and shoot, and evolve.

Mark Mawson’s Photography profile.

Mark studied photo journalism in Sheffield, England and worked for national newspapers in London such as The Times, Sunday Times, Today, Daily Mail & Mail on Sunday for 5 years before moving into magazine and advertising work.

He moved to Sydney 7 years ago and shoots for several men’s, women’s and lifestyle magazines and advertising agencies. His work includes celebrity portraiture, fashion and landscape/location work. Whenever possible he shoots with a cinematic style evoking mood and atmosphere in his shots.

Mark has been shooting with Olympus cameras for 4 years, producing his incredible underwater series on the Olympus E-series bodies and Zuiko Digital Pro lenses.

“I have been using Olympus E-series cameras & lenses for 4 years. I find the dust reduction system amazing, I never have to worry about cleaning the sensor. Their ultra-fast and razor sharp professional lenses coupled with their robust, well built bodies make it a great system.”
